Super Mario Maker 2 Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
1. Removed Features
In recent years, Nintendo has really come around from what was the smouldering dumpster fire of the Wii U era, and seem on it when getting their first-party line up on Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for example, was quickly ported to the new console immediately making it worth the purchase.
Many other new titles followed suit, but the straight-up quick port jobs stopped there. 2019 looked to be a pretty empty year for Nintendo, and so it was speculated that Mario Maker would be translated to the new hardware wholesale. We got an all new game instead, but sadly with some features stripped out - as if Reggie got whatever he could before his last day in office.
Skinny Mario, probably the iconic mascot of the previous game is gone and even more egregiously, the ability to download and edit player-created levels has gone also. This was a useful tool for players to take extremely hard and demanding levels and break them down, section by section.
Now that's vanished, this may lead to some of the more notorious creators such as Dan Ryckert seeing their levels never completed.
(Skinny Mario can be found as an easter egg, but not in a playable form)
