The moment we all saw Mario possess a T-Rex was the moment that Super Mario Odyssey became an instant game of the year contender. No joke.

Besides introducing a bunch of new traversal moves and generally being a great character addition, Cappy also brings along the ability to capture enemies. This essentially means that Mario can possess people. Game of the year folks.

In all seriousness, the Capture ability gives the enemies of Mario a whole new purpose and a level of depth that’s never been seen before in the series. Mario also gains the ability of whatever he captures, which means that even environmental objects like telephone wires and taxis can be used however the player likes.

The introduction of both Cappy and Capturing was one of the biggest and best surprises in Super Mario Odyssey, and a big reason why it looks like it’ll be a game of the year contender.
