What really needs to be said about the OG Super Mario Kart that hasn't been hyperbolically said before?

It would be easy to be quite flippant about the racing classic - especially as it appears to be such an immature take on the race formula - but the longevity and the endless replayability of it is the perfect answer to any cynicism. It is a local multiplayer legend - almost seminal in that respect - with an irresistible hook of in-race battle and the best power-up system of any game ever.

And it's not simple either: sure, playing against the compute quickly became easy, but the community of local players was so invested that almost everyone in a SNES-playing friend group was capable of putting up a challenge. Which is precisely what made it all so intoxicatingly competitive.

The fact that it still holds up today says a lot.
