Though Namco’s Tekken and Soul Calibur series have been major players in continuously refining and improving the fighting genre over the last two and a half decades, the two most iconic properties are undoubtedly Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

Similar but different enough to coexist harmoniously in arcades and across the full spectrum of consoles, the two have somehow never crossed over, with Street Fighter’s cast instead having squared off against Marvel heroes and their Tekken counterparts.

The main issue Mortal Kombat has always faced with Nintendo is its focus on extremely bloody violence. Nintendo have always sought a family friendly reputation and as such, MK games have always been subject to huge alterations such as the removal of blood and the censorship of the brutal fatalities that have come to define the series. These restrictions have eased over time, however, and MK11 released completely uncut on the Switch last year.

With Ryu and Ken now established on the Super Smash Bros roster (potentially setting the stage for additional iconic brawlers such as Zangief and M. Bison to follow them in future games – Guile is already an assist trophy), its time that they got to mix things up with the likes of Scorpion and Sub Zero.

They’d have to be massively toned down like Solid Snake was and fatalities are probably off the menu, but who wouldn’t want to hear ‘GET OVER HERE’ yelled at the likes of Kirby or Samus?
