Smash is a fighting game first and foremost, but a massive part of its appeal, especially in recent years, is its celebration of video game icons past and present, and Dragon Quest remains one of the only historic JRPGs not to be represented.

If the player character from Capcom's Monster Hunter isn't destined to fill the mystery character slot found in the game's files, then the next best guess is Dragon Quest's Eldrick or, generally speaking, each game's Hero. The connection comes by way of the Japanese name for Dragon Quest's protagonist - Yūsha - which translates to Brave or Hero in English and appeared on one of a near-endless number of supposed leak lists.

This particular rumour, besides echoing several names mentioned by others, correctly predicted an announcement of Arc System Works' Granblue Fantasy fighting game before it was made public, so there's at least a chance the anonymous whistleblower has access to inside information.

Ultimately, the final decision rests in Square Enix's hands, but with FFVII's Cloud already a part of the roster, permission certainly isn't the issue.
