Tekken: Every Game Ranked From Worst To Best

8. Tekken 4

Coming off the heels of the very successful Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament was no easy task, and during its release, Tekken 4 was considered a huge disappointment.

The game tried to overhaul a lot of the mechanics that made previous games popular. Fighting was slower, and more methodical while players could switch stances with opponents to corner them into walls. Stages also featured uneven terrain - a change that led to some unbalanced gameplay.

Finally, fans weren't too keen on the change of character movesets, particularly Jin Kazama who became too overpowered and cheap during competitive play.

Yet despite these perceived missteps, Tekken 4 has been appreciated for its dark story - one of the most serious in the series. Characters like Paul were given the respect they deserved, while 4 brought back original protagonist, Kazuya Mishima. Its atmospheric realistic locations, costumes, and music were also praised as some of the best in the entire franchise.

And so while Tekken 4 may not reach the highs of its predecessor, its aesthetic is as good as ever and can be appreciated for trying to take the series in a new direction.
