Tekken: Every Game Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Tekken 4
I was there when it happened, when Tekken 4 was unveiled to the world, when we all played it and thought, "What... the f**k have they done?!". However, in retrospect, you have to give Namco credit for not resting on their laurels, instead doing something markedly different with one of gaming's most lucrative and hyped properties.
Yes, championing Tekken 4 in any respect tends to invite boos and hisses, but it was with this game where Namco introduced a pivotal change to the feel of Tekken - that of technicality, placement in the arena and long-term strategy.
They brought in stages with multiple levels, destructible scenery, walls that could be combo'd off - they even replaced one of every character's two main grapples with a position-switch, letting anybody reverse position with their opponent at any time.
It was certainly very different - the GTA IV to this franchise's beloved San Andreas - but when all's said and done, Namco did the right thing in evolving gameplay mechanics that could've remained the same forever.
