Few fictional cities have become a part of the cultural zeitgeist the way Gotham has. In Batman lore, Gotham City has been given a rich and deep history. One thing that remains consistent about Gotham is that it always has at least one resident who is hell-bent on its destruction.

As previously mentioned, every version of Gotham has been a reflection of each film's tone. Matt Reeves seems to have taken the look and dysfunction of Rocksteady's Gotham and put it on the silver screen. Tim Burton's Gotham had an older, goth-cyberpunk look and feel. Christopher Nolan's Gotham looked like the love child of Chicago and Pittsburgh. Reeves' Gotham could have been pulled directly from the Arkham-verse.

For some reason, it's always raining or snowing in both Gothams. The weather, the crime and the filth, they are what give these Gothams their charm. Both versions manage to look and feel like once-robust cities that have been degraded into bullet-riddled slums. They both feel as though they are always inches from self-destruction, but still just on this side of salvation. It's why we keep coming back to see Batman save the same city after so many movies.
