The Elder Scrolls 6: 9 Things It Must Do Better Than Skyrim

8. User Interface

The Elder Scrolls 6
Bethesda

Compared with Oblivion's antiquated tab-based menus, Skyrim's is the most user-friendly to have ever graced the genre, but Bethesda still have a ways to go before navigating layered character sheets and inventory lists feels intuitive.

Credit where it's due, the minimalist approach worked well for console players with no option other than to use a gamepad, but for PC players it was a different story. Scrolling through endless lists of uninformative item names with a mouse wheel felt more like spreadsheet management than a quick pit-stop to access any particular item.

Not until modders swooped in to fix Bethesda's mistakes did inventory navigation for keyboard and mouse users feel satisfactory.

But that's besides the point. It shouldn't be left up to fans to remedy these issues. Bethesda built its name on PC: ignoring it in favour of consoles wasn't a wise decision.

Nice visual feedback it may be, to see a 3D-rendered chunk of ore accompany its position in your backpack, but that development time could have been better spent on providing filters and sort functions to cut down on unnecessary busywork.
