The Elder Scrolls VI: 10 Essential Things It Must Learn From Skyrim
2. Make Horses A Better, Faster Form Of Transport
Nabbing a steed to traverse the world is something seen everywhere from Ocarina of Time to Shadow of the Colossus, and in both those games it gives a much-needed boost to your traversal across the game world. In Skyrim, however nabbing a horse felt like a marginal improvement on walking speed - assumedly to still let you breathe in the world around you. The thing with creating a world plenty players genuinely want to drink in, is balancing that initial fascination with the fatigue that can set in when walking through the same areas over and over. The mid-point would be letting you unlock various mounts across the game - or something like a horse that can be levelled up accordingly - to allow for a bridge between both these approaches. Most of the time if the gamer has forever resorted to Fast Travel'ing everywhere, the world designer has failed. Bethesda have always been on the better side of that divide with TES, as from Morrowind to especially Skyrim, you'll come across a million memorable things if you walk to a destination instead of skipping it - but all the same something that gives you the sensation of on-foot exploration that's also fast enough to feel like you're not missing out on just starting the next quest would be ideal.
