The Elder Scrolls VI: 10 Essential Things It Must Learn From Skyrim
10. Animation - Make Third Person Feel Worthwhile
This is the 'Final Fantasy VII problem' all over again; that notion of when building a suitably gargantuan world, something has to take a hit to let it all run remotely smoothly. For FF VII it was the now-legendary blocky graphics, and for Skyrim it's the animations in general. Third person in particular has been a mainstay of the series for years, but can you honestly say it feels like the 'right' way to play, as oppose to looking like some mod you're forcing the game into, only to flip back to first whenever a fight occurs? Playing Skyrim with the camera behind your character lets you really understand your place in the world, not to mention ogling at all the pieces of armour or items you've got dangling off your person. If the option to switch things up into third-person is going to exist at all, it really needs to feel natural, and not just that you're essentially still in first with an avatar plonked in the middle of the screen.
