Not only was it basically the sole reason for the Pendulum Wars, but as noted earlier, gave Niles the excuse he needed for an ample supply of bodies for testing.

Many inhabitants on the planet and even players throughout the series would have thought that Queen Myrrah was behind the subterranean race known as the Locust. But no, these were all one man's twisted creations.

See, Niles was meant to cure Imulsion-poisoned miners of Rustlung. Being based at the New Hope Research Facility, he would cover up his sick experiments as he conducted genetic experimentation on children. He would inject children with Imulsion, only to discover that the glowing liquid would cause a breakdown of their cells, leaving them to slowly degenerate.

During this process, Niles was assigned to produce a medicine for the COG, but as he put it, he was "creating gods" for them. A byproduct of this was the production of Sires, which came about after he spliced human DNA with specific creatures that lived in the Hollow underneath the surface.

One test subject, Myrrah, would be so resistant to Imulsion, that eventually with the use of her stem cells and Sires, the Locust as a group with a purpose were finally created. In Mount Kadar's secret laboratory, Niles would plunge the planet into another 17 years of war...
