Tomb Raider: Ranking Every Game Worst To Best
4. Tomb Raider (2013)
During the era of reboots in every entertainment industry becoming superfluously unnecessary, no major IP was safe from the treatment. So, naturally, Tomb Raider was a dead ringer to be called upon.
In a year that saw Evil Dead precariously reimagined, the Man of Steel reinforced and The Wolverine stealing more revenue than it earned; Tomb Raider was the ubiquitous anomaly.
In other words, it was a practically perfect reinterpretation, with a grittier tone and appetite for bloodshed which was somewhat subjugated by minor flaws that don't necessarily derail or sully the experience, but certainly detract from the impact it should've had.
Although Lara's now reimagined with a new origin story that implores her soft sensibilities rather than her now archaic "badassery", along with a rag-tag group of researchers and new arsenal of widow making weapons, she herself is a large issue.
Understandably, in an origin story based around such a vulnerable protagonist, at the base of their development, they're naturally going to have much thinner skin.
Vulnerable? Did I say vulnerable, sorry, that should've read IMPENETRABLE. As Lara f*****g Croft is a gargantuan exception to this rule. This woman takes a battering reminiscent of a Dragon Ball character. The unbelievablity of her being stabbed, shot with arrows, falling from great heights and almost being sexually assaulted is egregious masochism.
Outside of this jarring problem though, the game's an absolute masterpiece that acts as a guide on how to perfectly resurrect an IP.
