4. Combat Is Thoroughly Diversified
Guns, guns and you guessed it, more guns. Nathan Drake is packing more heat than Sylvester Stallone in a sauna, but rarely is he given the chance to explore some more exotic combat options. The grappling hook is an excellent start though, the ability to latch onto overhanging rocks, swing across a chasm and punch an enemy in the face providing a feeling of pure exhilaration. The multiplayer beta that took place last December gave players a relatively in-depth taster of what this mechanic will offer, and its usefulness in combat as well as traversal will surely prove an effective tool to complement the firearms. Uncharted frequently puts you in some huge, on-rails set pieces that, while epic in scope, feel too choreographed to truly be exciting on multiple playthroughs. Areas like these should be opened up, allowing the player to attack them from any angle they see fit -- can Nate sneak through this area undetected if appropriate? Does he have to use his grappling hook to kill that enemy, or can he climb around this cliff-face and sneak up for a melee attack instead? Additionally, the option to equip more than two weapons and carry multiple types of explosive would be great additions. Being able to booby-trap a building with mines, Home Alone style, while your enemies helplessly fend off your phantom attacks would provide players with a whole new way to experience combat, and would significantly freshen each enemy encounter.
