Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - 5 Things We Learned From E3

4. May Be More Narrative-Driven

What's telling about this E3 teaser for Uncharted 4 is that it doesn't feature any gameplay, instead focussing on setting up the story for the latest entry in the celebrated series. It's the Uncharted games that rescued Naughty Dog from the somewhat ignominious title of "those guys who made Crash Bandicoot", but the developers have really made a name for themselves with their most recent release, The Last Of Us - and that's in-part thanks to the fantastic script-writing talents of Neil Druckmann. The post-apocalyptic PS3 exclusive was groundbreaking not particularly in its gameplay or graphics, but in that it was primarily concerned with telling a moving story and taking advantage of all the narrative possibilities you can explore in video games over any other medium. Now the Uncharted games have always had their own fun, witty and exciting plots and characters, but that's never been at the forefront - and especially not in the dour way this teaser presents our otherwise quip-happy action hero. Either we didn't get any gameplay footage in this teaser because of its very nature, or because Naughty Dog know that by the fourth main entry in the series we're all familiar with the high-flying platforming-action style of the previous games. Or perhaps - more tantalisingly - they're taking a cue from The Last Of Us and looking to tell an incredibly intense story within the Uncharted franchise.
