Well, who else could it possibly be? Sans is a big reason why Undertale blew up like it did, as his influence over the internet through memes was a massive piece of advertising for the game. Seeing this little skeleton sprite pop up all over the place drew many people to the game, but he's not just limited to memeability.

It's clear from the offset that Sans doesn't take much seriously. He's a laid back guy who cares about his brother and only seems concerned with cracking goofy puns. This instantly makes you fall for him as his attitude is infectious, and although they may be cheesy, his jokes are great.

But, there's a deeper side to Sans, as you learn through his game bending antics - especially in his gruelling genocide run boss fight - that he also has power over the game. He can manipulate spaces, play with the medium and even reset you during your battle.

The combination of his instantly fun personality and the mystery behind his power, knowledge and abilities make him the complete package. Plus, once you add that he's easily the most iconic part of the game, it's beyond a shadow of a doubt that he deserves the number one spot.
