Theres nothing like a short, sharp shock in the introduction to let you know that a game is not messing around. The Last of Us did it perfectly with Sarahs death, and Until Dawn also captures this atmosphere by killing off Beth and Hannah right from the get go. After Hannah runs off into the mountain woods (since her friends were being humongous jerks), you have to follow her trail as Beth to try and get her back to the lodge and out of danger. Shes pretty easy to find, and it looks like the game is going to be forgiving at this stage until suddenly the twins find themselves hunted to the edge of a cliff by a mysterious creature. Your choices here are merely an illusion whatever you do, Beth and Hannah will both tumble off the edge into the chasm below. And then comes the worst bit of this scene the impact. Beth lands squarely on a rocky outcrop, breaking her back with a sickening crunching sound. Hannah doesnt fare much better. And the scene ends with the pairs lifeless eyes looking into the camera as it fades to black. Ten minutes in and two of the group are already dead. As we said before Until Dawn does not mess around.
