Until Dawn 2: 10 Improvements For The Perfect Sequel

4. A Less Obvious Reveal

Until Dawn's biggest twist was not the identity of the Psychopath. Its biggest twist was the fact that the Psychopath was not the real killer.

Although it won't be spoiled here, when playing through the game, it is extremely obvious who the killer is. From the prologue establishing their relationship with the twins that die at the very beginning, to their very specific inside knowledge about the characters, the killer could be seen from a mile away.

Not even "killing" off the person under the mask halfway through the game deterred from the obviousness.

Making the identity of the main villain less obvious is largely dependent on the game's writing. Figuring out who is under the mask should only be for the very skilled, including only the most subtle of hints and clues. The reveal should be shocking, yet logical, with a clear motivation. Replaying the game should allow players to see the subtle hints and clues and have small realizations throughout.

Obviously, this is no easy feat. Writers of horror movies have been failing at this for decades. However, it is essential for maximizing the best experience. With enough work and skill, Supermassive Games could create one of the best written representations of horror ever in Until Dawn 2.
