Warhammer 40K: 10 Essential Reads From The Black Library
8. Fabius Bile Series By Josh Reynolds
Fabius Bile is a misunderstood soul. Josh Reynolds peels back the fetid human cloak from Bile’s shoulders and examines the workings of humanities “greatest” apothecary.
Not only do you get to enjoy a well crafted story where Bile becomes entangled in the plots of his former legion the Emperor’s Children and their lofty goals of returning to their former glory. Along with becoming the subject of the playful servants of the Laughing God, the Eldar Harlequins and their newest play “The Prince of Feathers”.
You also get an opportunity to see Fabius as a man, not just the fleshcrafting monster that he is portrayed as in the lore. He is actually deeply charismatic and quick-witted with an intriguing world view.
He sees the terror of the darkness of space and wishes to make humanity stronger to master it. His character often appears fatherly when interacting with the mutant hordes that roam his ship or even to the members of his Consortium, a gathering of apothecaries from across all the shattered legions to learn under his guidance.
However, the reason this is such an important series is that Fabius openly questions the wisdom of the Emperor and frankly makes an excellent point.
“More than once I have questioned the Emperor’s wisdom in bestowing his gifts upon but one half of the human race. For in man, as in all beasts, the female is the deadlier of the species.”
