WWE 2K22 Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs
5. UP - MyRise Mode Is Fun (If Terribly Scripted)
Clocking in at a reported fifty hours and containing over a thousand different choices and matchups as a result, MyRise is going to be a mode that demands a lot of your time, and in all honesty, it is the most fun outside of the brilliantly crafted Rey Mysterio showcase as you watch your chosen freak of the week climb to the tops of superstardom.
For me it was my pale goblin of a human who dressed as a king, sported Jimmy Neutron hair and a mouth full of teeth right out of the "Big Book Of British Smiles" who rose through the ranks, siding with the heels, making selfish choices and screwing over everyone in their pursuit of WWE Gold, and while I absolutely loved all the choices offered to the player and the minimal downtime between in-ring action, there was one huge issue holding this back from being a mode I truly connected with.
The writing, man... it's absolutely !*$% dire.
Outside of Drew Gulak giving the tutorial performance of his life, almost every other voice actor sounds like they're being held at gunpoint to deliver their lines.
You can almost hear Vince snarling "you best remember all the weird buzzwords we use" and as a result, the dialogue flows like curdled milk. To be fair at least it's representative of the product you're watching week to week, but man that doesn't make swallowing all this tripe any easier.
The presentation of this mode is on point, the gameplay and dedicated storylines are a massive boon, but the acting makes things feel less like an epic ascension and more like a school play.
