"Dive into MyGM headfirst" is deliberate, because there's just no way anyone can take in the mode's intricacies immediately. MyGM is rather overwhelming at first, so you're better off experimenting and laughing off failure. That's almost guaranteed to happen during your first play through.

Don't worry though, 'cause it's all a learning process and still a giggle to mess around with. Learning how the GM algorithms work is essential to winning, and that's easier said than done when first booting up the mode. In fairness, those algorithms are less...rigid than they were in 2K22, which is a slight relief.

MyGM might even be considered a worthwhile stop off for those who think Universe is a tad broad. Yes, it's overwhelming too, but not in an unfair way. Honestly, just jump in, go wild with experimentation and then attack it better next time.

Trial and error is a risky gameplay decision, but it works here.
