Xbox Game Pass: 10 Best Horror Games You Must Play
6. Alice: Madness Returns
Calling all dark fairytale and fantasy lovers, this title is just your cup of Mad Hatter's tea.
An EA Play title, Alice: Madness Returns is the sequel to American McGee's Alice. Although the sequel reviewed worse than the original, it has received further praise over the years, and is far more accessible to jump in and play than the first entry, due to its updated controls and mechanics. You don't need to have knowledge of the first game to enjoy Madness Returns, but if you would rather start with the first, it is handily included in the download with its sequel.
The hack-and-slash gameplay is fun, but the real selling point of Spicy Horse's sequel is its overarching dark fantasy design and inspiration. Teeth are collected to trade in for weapon upgrades, cities float on clouds of cogs, teapots with red eyes attack you, and Alice in Wonderland characters are peppered throughout the narrative.
The graphics are dated, even by 2009's standards, and the invisible walls are annoying, but these are small grievances in an otherwise very enjoyable platformer.
Madness Returns is all about Alice's dark memories of her past, and whether they should be forgotten or not, and you certainly won't forget your memories of gliding, slicing, and pepper-grinding your way through Wonderland.
