Yakuza: Why Everybody Loves Goro Majima

9. He Has His Serious Moments

Majima is known for being a light-hearted character but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his serious moments. For example, when he refuses to kill Makoto despite knowing it’s what he has to do to be welcomed back into the family. This is one of the first instances where you get to see his morals, he’s not opposed to people getting hurt but he has his limits.

Another big moment for his character development is when he learns he was sent to kill Makoto because Shimano knew he wouldn’t do it. Now not only has he lost Makoto but he feels like a clown for not realising what Shimano thought of him. He ends up in a street fight but doesn’t care enough to fight back and it’s a gruelling moment to watch. It shows the intricacies of his character, whilst he’s incredibly strong and violent, he still has emotions and his Mad Dog persona is just one side of his character.

He has many serious moments throughout the series with Saejima, Makoto and Kiryu to name a few. Even the conversation where he explains his decision to live for himself and be insane is a pretty serious moment. These moments make him a really interesting character, as they show he doesn't always act crazy or for the sake of his own enjoyment. He shows throughout the games he can be serious when he needs to be and it's nice for the player to see this more emotional side of Majima.
