Though Majima can come across as deeply violent and uncaring at times, when you play through his side of the story you see that he goes to great length to help and protect others. There was really nothing Majima wouldn’t have done for Makoto, including taking revenge for her, which would have had huge consequences for him if he wasn't stopped. His love for her really struck a chord with the fans and it was nice to see this side of Majima.
It’s not just Makoto he cared for though. He helped Kiryu to get his strength back, whether that was for Kiryu’s benefit or his own, and even fights alongside him on occasion. He is also shown to care deeply for his sworn brother Saejima. He is ordered not to help Saejima but refuses to abandon him and loses his own eye as part of his punishment. Then there are the hostesses at Club Sunshine and many other side characters he helps along the way.
It’s this softer side to Majima that really resonates with the player. It’s fun to see him beat off hordes of thugs or show his strength in boss battles, but it's also great to see the genuine care he has for other people. The heart-warming moments the player sees from Majima are what really makes his character so great. He may be tough, violent and bad-tempered but on the other side of his personality he’s kind, compassionate and good.
