7. Luke Lerner - Better Watch Out
Where horror movies are concerned, whoever expects the apparently imperiled child?
The Christmas-themed psychological horror Better Watch Out centers around a babysitter, Ashley (Olivia DeJonge), who must defend 12-year-old Luke (Levi Miller) and his friend Garrett (Ed Oxenbould) from a home invasion.
Garrett is apparently shot dead early on, but mid-way through the film is revealed to be one of the "intruders," whereupon Ashley realises that there was no home invasion, and entire setup was a ploy orchestrated by Luke to "rescue" Ashley, who he has feelings for.
At this point, Luke knocks Ashley out and he and Garrett hold both her and her boyfriend Ricky (Aleks Mikic) hostage in the house.
All hell soon enough breaks loose as a game of cat-and-mouse ensues, leading to the deaths of Ricky, Ashley's ex Jeremy (Dacre Montgomery), and Garrett at the hands of an increasingly deranged Luke.
The film ends with Luke framing Jeremy for the deaths as his parents return home and alert the authorities, but Ashley is revealed to have survived Luke's attempt to kill her, suggesting she'll alert the police to who the real killer is.
Talk about a movie that pulls the rug out from under the audience early on. If you went into Better Watch Out simply expecting a gory take on Home Alone, it sure had other ideas.
