Most insults are measured by their savagery - Carlos Tevez calling Gary Neville a "boot-licker" or El Hadji-Diouf labelling Jamie Carragher "a f*cking loser" and "the biggest turkey on the field" for example. However, as with most things in football, Eric Cantona broke the mould when he took aim at French midfielder Didier Deschamps.

Instead of mercilessly taking the France captain to task for holes in his game, he used an insult that was simultaneously relatively tame and brutally cutting in it's honesty, so much so that "Porter d’eau" became Deschamps' nickname from then on:

"Deschamps gets by because he always gives 100 per cent, but he will never be anything more than a water carrier. You can find players like him on every street corner."
