10 Best Spanish Players In Premier League History

4. David De Gea

Given his recent dip in form, it’s easy to forget just how good a goalkeeper David De Gea is.

With the legendary Edwin van der Sar close to retirement, Manchester United eyed a young Spaniard who was impressing at Atletico Madrid. De Gea’s transfer cost the Red Devils £20 million, a hefty fee for a keeper back in 2011.

But after a shaky start, De Gea adapted to the physical Premier League and played a big part in securing United’s last title win 2013. A fantastic shot-stopper, he is notable for his sharp reflexes, athleticism and unorthodox technique, opting to make as many saves with his feet as his hands.

After Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, De Gea was one of United’s few saving graces throughout the David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho era.

He managed to pick up an FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League trophy, as well as numerous personal accolades, including becoming the only player to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award four times, as well as making the PFA Team of the Year five times.

Since 2018 however, De Gea’s performances have been strewn with high-profile errors and with academy player Dean Henderson breaking through, the 29-year-old’s stay at Old Trafford might be coming to an end.

But even if that were the case, De Gea is still one of the best keepers to grace the Premier League, a player who at his peak was quite possibly the best in the world.
