10 Biggest Premier League Transfers That Nearly Happened
4. Robert Lewandowski To Blackburn Rovers
Not many fans across the country have had to endure as much misery in recent years as supporters of Blackburn Rovers. Under the 'leadership' of the comical Venky's, the once established Premier League club have endured two relegations in five years. They are now preparing for life in League One.
How different things could have been. In 2010, Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce had been tracking a certain Robert Lewandowski, who was making quite the impression playing in his native Poland for Lech Poznan. Eager to complete a deal, Allardyce invited Lewandowski to Lancashire. However, the infamous eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland produced an ash cloud that saw European air traffic reach a standstill. Lewandowski's flight to England was one of those that fell victim.
Unable to reschedule, Lewandowski was soon snapped up by Borussia Dortmund and the rest, as they say, is history. The fortunes of both Lewandowski and Blackburn since could not be any different. Lewandowski is a worldwide superstar, now leading the line for German giants Bayern Munich, while Blackburn are in the third tier of English football.
