10 Candidates To Be Steve McClaren's Newcastle Captain
6. Steven Taylor
For those crying out for a "Geordie" to lead the Newcastle side, Steven Taylor is one of only two realistic options. His "fist pumps" to the Gallowgate End show the passion he has for wearing the shirt and Taylor does add a vocal presence to the Newcastle back four when he plays, constantly speaking to the other defenders and his goalkeeper. Unfortunately, Taylor's inability to stay fit for any sort of extended period means the likelihood of him being given the captaincy is small. Throughout his entire career Taylor has struggled with regular niggling injuries, and that is unlikely to change going forward. Also, there is a decent chance he will not be one of the first-choice central-defenders, so he would only be named squad captain rather than first-team skipper anyway. What's more, incidents such as Taylor's red card away at Manchester City two years ago - when he stupidly got himself dismissed - show disciplinary issues that a captain should be attempting to prevent, not actively causing himself. Likelihood Of Being Captain For 2015-16 Season: 3/10
