10 Controversies & Scandals That Rocked Chelsea

7. The Managerial Changes

One of the most controversial things Chelsea have been associated with over the years is their reluctance to give managers a chance. The club have become just as infamous for their 'revolving door' policy as owner Roman Abramovich has for his lack of patience. Abramovich has come in for criticism from the League Managers Association (LMA) numerous times since taking over the club, with LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson once observing that the Russian tycoon "doesn't know how to build a successful club". Chelsea have gone through nine managers since Abramovich bought the club in 2003 with Jose Mourinho - into his second spell in charge of the Blues - their tenth permanent manager in 11 years. It's a scandalous statistic and some of the sackings have been absolutely ridiculous. Roberto di Matteo, for example, took over in March 2012, won the FA Cup, won the Champions League - the club's first ever - but was gone by November. Avram Grant (above) meanwhile took his side to the Champions League final in May 2008 and was within a John Terry slip away from winning the trophy, yet he lasted only eight months in his job. It is moments like this that have blighted the club and you have to wonder, if Chelsea had enjoyed more stability, would they still be waiting for a first Premier League title since 2010?
