6. Michael Ballack

Michael Ballack was brought to Chelsea in 2006, with the remit of helping the team finally conquer the Champions League after years of being Europe's bridesmaids.

His credentials for the job were pretty impressive: the former Bayern man had netted 60 goals over the four seasons he spent in Bavaria, and joined the Blues after narrowly missing out on home-soil World Cup glory with Germany (a team he captained for five years).

Ballack's time in England was marred by the occasional pesky injury, but he still helped his side to Premier League glory in 2010 and a Champions League runner's up medal two years earlier.

And if any of his teammates ever needed a helping hand when tempers spilled over, the midfielder was never too far away from the action.
