10 Important Last Minute Goals That Should Never Have Happened

7. Jimmy Glass - Carlisle United 2-1 Plymouth Argyle (8 May 1999)

On the final day of the season, Carlisle and Scarborough battled it out to avoid relegation to the Conference. Carlisle sat bottom, looking to avoid relegation to non-league football for the first time since 1928.

Plymouth Argyle visited Brunton Park on the last day of the season looking to relegate Carlisle, and as the game entered stoppage time it looked like they had done just that. With Scarborough at home to Peterborough, both games sat 1-1, which would be enough for The Seadogs. When the full-time whistle blew at the McCain Stadium, Scarborough had done enough and their fans invaded the pitch to celebrate, awaiting confirmation of the Carlisle score.

In the days where the transfer deadline was in late March, Carlisle had an injury crisis in goal, and had to apply for special dispensation from the Football League to loan in a goalkeeper in April. They signed Jimmy Glass on loan from Swindon Town, who had spent the majority of the season in the reserves. Sometimes circumstances create history, and as Glass went up for a late corner, no-one quite knew what they were about to witness.

The corner came in, and Scott Dobie's header was parried by one goalkeeper into the path of the other, as Glass smashed it home to save Carlisle. Thousands of fans invaded the pitch to celebrate with an unlikely hero. Glass would never play another game for Carlisle, but his third and final appearance couldn't have been more memorable.
