10 Important Last Minute Goals That Should Never Have Happened

5. Jon Macken - Tottenham Hotspur 3-4 Manchester City (4 February 2004)

How did this happen?

It was half-time at White Hart Lane and Spurs were 3-0 up in an FA Cup replay. Man City's Nicolas Anelka had limped off early, to be replaced by Jon Macken. That pair were not two stars of equal magnitude it's safe to say. If the game wasn't over enough already, Joey Barton decided he can't be bothered coming out for the second half and talked his way into a red card. With ten men, City were doomed.

Even Sylvain Distin's headed goal early in the second half could largely be ignored. But Paul Bosvelt's deflected goal, which bounced in off Anthony Gardner, made it a game. It was 3-2 with 20 minutes left, and just ten minutes later, Sean Wright-Phillips equalised with a majestic lob over an onrushing Kasey Keller after being played in by Robbie Fowler. Cue unbelievable scenes among the away fans.

Then as the clock hit 90, Michael Tarnat's cross was met by Jon Macken, and his bullet header into the bottom corner sealed the most absurd FA Cup comeback in living memory. Macken may not have even been on the pitch had it not been for Anelka's injury, but he made the difference in an all-time classic.
