10 Liverpool Players Who Fell Out With The Manager

6. Ronnie Whelan

As everybody knows, Graeme Souness has often struggled to keep a lid on his temper in the past, especially when dealing with the rambunctious sort ala Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Craig Bellamy. Perhaps it€™s why he hasn€™t managed a football team in almost a decade. During his failed stint as manager of Liverpool during the early 90€™s, the volatile Scot was feeling the pressure due to a string of poor results during the 92/93 season, and decided to take it out on members of the Liverpool squad. Ronnie Whelan describes how it was a 4-1 reverse at Ewood Park where he decided to challenge his manager.
''Souey started ranting about €˜the older players€™ in the Ewood Park dressing room that day. I took exception. He didn€™t name us but he was referring to me, Nicol, Barnes and Rush. Souey€™s accusation was that we weren€™t doing enough to help the younger lads along. I was fuming inside, because, number one, there was no acknowledgement from him that he might be at fault too. And number too, it wasn€™t true. I said to Souey, €˜Look, it€™s not as simple as that. You try talking to them and they tell you to f*** off€™. He was losing it now. It just descended into a shouting match. He kept challenging me. So I snapped back at him. €˜Ah, just f*** off and leave me alone.€™ You can imagine the silence around the room. I was getting shot down completely and no one backed me up, which was a bit of a sad situation really. Nine months after that bust-up at Blackburn, Graeme resigned.€™€™ - Ronnie Whelan, August 2011.
