When football observers hear the name Elano, they may fondly recall the silky playmaker orchestrating intricate moves for an improving City side, as he muscled his way into a talented Brazilian midfield. What nostalgia chooses to cast to the back of their minds, however, was his rebellious nature, coursing through the squad like a poison, choosing to sulk when finding himself on the periphery of the first-team.
''In the last week I have been left out of two games. I don't why and I think the Manchester City fans have a right to know. That's why I'm here publicly saying to the fans, and the people at the club who like me, that I'm very disappointed and sad. When I am playing I know what he wants but when I come off, there is nothing from him.'' - Elano, November 2008.
With former City midfielder Steven Ireland intimating that the midfielder had formed something of a South American 'clan' with club record signing Robinho, it would appear that the camp was not a united one with the aloof playmaker within their ranks. Before his summer transfer to Galatasary, the wantaway midfielder had fired a 'come and get me' plea in the direction of Jose Mourinho, as he was desperate to end his Eastlands misery, all the while causing consternation within the City camp.
''I have a contract with Manchester City. But I hope the Nerazzuri do not see this as a constraint. I would wear the Inter shirt. I hope Julio Cesar can put in a good word for me.'' - Elano, June 2009.
