10 MMA Fighters Who Never Reached Their Full Potential
7. Lee Murray
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11WJfvae8jw"Lightning" Lee Murray, infamous for his actions, surprisingly more so due to his antics outside the cage. A big British Middleweight, Murray stood at 6ft 3" and has some fantastic power in his punches, he was no slouch on the ground either. Murray amassed a 8-1-1 record on his way to a title shot for the Cage Rage Middleweight belt. This included victories over tough brawler Jorge Rivera and one of the legends from the NHB MMA days, Jose Landi-Jons. Murray would face Anderson Silva for the belt, however the fight nearly broke out at the weigh ins as Silva and Murray went head to head and shoved each other, nearly starting a mass brawl. Murray went on to lose the fight via decision.
There is also the infamous story that Murray knocked out UFC legend Tito Ortiz outside a club in London is 2002 with a 5 punch combination. Ortiz denies this story but MMA trainer Pat Miletich and UFC legend Matt Hughes have said they witnessed it and it really happened.
On 28 September 2005, Murray was hospitalized after being stabbed in a brawl during the birthday party of British glamour model Lauren Pope. Just when you thought it was crazy enough, Murray was arrested for his involvement in the biggest cash robbery in British history (Securitas depot robbery). After fleeing to Morocco, Moroccan police arrested Murray in 2006. His initial sentence was 10 years, it was extended to 25 years in 2010.
Murray was a fantastic fighter with the potential to be up there with the elite, unfortunately he couldn't keep on the right side of the law to find out.
