10 Most Controversial Premier League Moments
2. You Wouldn’t Like Luis Suarez When He’s ‘Hangry’
Uruguayan superstar Luis Suarez arrived in England from Ajax with a glowing reputation, and little mention of a wild side that had reared its ugly head in Holland.
Liverpool, however, endured his Jekyll and Hyde character in all its forms during a three-and-a-half-year stay at Anfield.
For all his wonderful performances and important goals, Suarez simply couldn’t stop anger issues from getting the better of him.
Having conceded a penalty at one end against Chelsea, Suarez raced forwards desperate to rectify the situation. However, his eagerness to secure the ball caused a tangle with Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic in the opposing area.
Shockingly, replays clearly showed that the feared Liverpool striker had used his teeth as a weapon by planting them into Ivanovic’s arm. What’s more, Suarez unashamedly –and unsuccessfully – claimed for a foul, yet eventually salvaged a point from the jaws of defeat with an injury-time equaliser.
Though the true extent of the confrontation was missed by officials, he was slapped with a 10-game ban in the aftermath. It was the beginning of the end for his time on Merseyside, as another similar occurrence only a year later at the 2014 World Cup saw him shunned by the Premier League and his club.
