10 Most Dramatic Late Winners In Domestic English Football

8. Michael Owen: Liverpool Vs Arsenal - 00/01 FA Cup Final

This cup final took place smack bang in the middle of Michael Owen’s Liverpool pomp. It took place before "horse racing and dour punditry" era Michael Owen, back when he was still little Mickey Owen, pacey speed merchant who banged goals in for fun and was England’s next big hope on the world stage.

For the majority of this final though, Arsenal absolutely spanked Liverpool and should have been several goals up by the time Freddie Ljungberg finally scored with 72 minutes gone. Thierry Henry then missed a great chance to double their lead just a few moments later.

At the 83rd minute mark however Owen grabbed an unlikely equaliser for Liverpool and a trophy that was seemingly slipping away from them was now firmly back within their grasp. With 88 minutes played and the spectre of extra time looming large, substitute Patrik Berger set Owen free down the left with a long searching ball. Owen latched on to effortlessly, comfortably outpacing and shrugging off the Arsenal defenders before firing a shot hard and low past David Seaman at his far post.

The Millennium Stadium erupted and cherub-faced boy-wonder celebrated his double with what can best be described as an ill-advised somersault that made Robbie Keane's efforts look like a shining example of gymnastic excellence. Owen completed a memorable domestic cup double for Liverpool that season (they'd add the UEFA Cup just days later) and immediately wrote himself into Cup Final folklore.
