10 Most Dramatic Late Winners In Domestic English Football
4. Steven Gerrard: Liverpool Vs West Ham - 05/06 FA Cup Final
Even the harshest of Liverpool critics would have been hard-pushed to not offer the TV a grudging nod of approval as this stunning effort from Steven Gerrard flew in to the back of the net.
The 2006 FA Cup Final was a stone cold belter and arguably one of the best in recent memory. West Ham took a two goal lead, were pegged back to 2-2, only for Paul Konchesky of all people to restore their lead. The game looked to be slipping away from Liverpool and the unfancied Hammers were on course for a memorable victory.
With minutes left to play, Gerrard was visibly suffering from cramp and was at times barely able to move at anything above a stroll. As the clock ticked past 90, a ball was sent in to the West Ham box, and the clearance fell to Gerrard some 35 yards out. The Liverpool captain proceeded to meet the ball with a thunderous volley that whizzed its way into the bottom corner of Shaka Hislop’s net. The Liverpool faithful went understandably bananas and from that point there was only going to be one winner in this encounter.
Gerrard was imperious on the day, at his masterful best in the Liverpool midfield, a man possessed determined to drag his team to victory. It’s worth nothing that after he scored a goal of the season while suffering from cramp, he then went on to complete extra time and also step up and stick home a penalty too for good measure. Well played, sir.
