10 Things We Learned From The English Premier League Football Weekend (30 Sept - 1 Oct 2017)
7. All Bets Are Off
One look at this fixture must have led accumulator fiends the land over to be seduced by the long odds of a draw - but the long man in the Southampton box settled the difference in a meeting between two of the league's most inconsistent and difficult-to-separate teams.
Virgil van Dijk, making his first appearance in age, stemmed the tide with his scouser-triggering composure and positional play. But Southampton's star-making machine seems to have faltered. They're no longer as easy on the eye as in seasons past, and Liverpool's transfer shopping list has shortened considerably. As if to underscore said inconsistency, van Dijk was an interceptor one moment and clumsy liability the next; he looked confused on the edge of the box as Berahino hovered around it - before electing to simply tug his shirt. He'll need to do something far funnier than that, if he is to secure his dream move to Merseyside. Berahino missed the resultant penalty by aiming his tame drive too close to Fraser Forster, and Southampton capitalised on his low confidence - and Stoke's set piece complacency - when Yoshida added his name to the aforementioned shopping list with a cultured scissor kick.
Sub Peter Crouch touched in a late goalmouth scramble to secure the three points for his side. Both chameleonic sides look destined to occupy the same spots - 12th and 13th - they do now at the end of the season, on this evidence.
