8. China (2002)
Despite being the most populated country on the planet, China has a historically awful football team that has only ever qualified for one World Cup, back in 2002. The Chinese were drawn in a tricky group that also featured eventual winners Brazil and third place finishers Turkey, as well as Costa Rica.
If China were going to get anything from the competition, it was likely to come in their opening group game with Costa Rica. The clash was marred by rough tackles and aggressive play on both sides, with seven yellow cards handed out in total, and the Costa Ricans netted twice within a four-minute period to win the game.
Brazil then weaved their magic and ran rings around the Chinese players in their second game, with several star players including Ronaldinho and Ronaldo getting on the scoresheet in a 4-0 thrashing. China's World Cup ended miserably in the final match, with Turkey scoring twice in the opening ten minutes and adding a third near the end.
