11 Transfers That Prove English Players Are Hideously Overpriced

5. Jordan Henderson To Liverpool (£20 Million)

Nick Potts/PA Archive/Press Association ImagesNick Potts/PA Archive/Press Association ImagesCurrent England starter Jordan Henderson signed for Liverpool in 2011, just a few days shy of his 21st birthday, for a massive £20 million fee. The move came a few months after another extortionate Anfield purchase (which we'll get to later) and just a month prior to the aforementioned Stewart Downing deal, as Liverpool splashed out no less than £75 million in six months for a trio of underwhelming and incredibly overpriced Englishmen. Henderson joined from Sunderland - his home town club and the club he had been with since he was a trainee - having made sixty league starts for the Black Cats and having made his England debut in the November of the previous year. He epitomises the terms "steady" and "underwhelming" and, while he doesn't make horrific mistakes very often, his contribution to any given match is not worth the sum paid out for him - and his running technique and general speed is questionable to say the least. His anonymous performances for England in the current World Cup were quite typical of the player.
