Chris Simpkin enjoyed a rather middling football career, notching up over 500 appearances in the 60s and 70s for a range of clubs such as Hull City, Huddersfield Town and Scunthorpe United. Nothing too exciting there, which could perhaps explain his later move into brothel ownership. Either that or the easy money on offer, given he was making a reported £2,000 a week from the Bradford-based XL Massage.

Eventually the police caught up with him. He was taken to court, sentenced to two years imprisonment, as well as ordered to pay back over £90,000 from money laundered. In Simpkin’s defence, he argues he was only the brothel’s leaseholder and wasn’t responsible for the actual running of the business. Either way, in the eyes of the law he was screwed.
