6 Men Who Weren't Afraid To Be Themselves

1. David Bowie

Bowie Ziggy Stardust
Genius

Many of the world's most influential artists have bucked societal trends in pursuit of their own identity, but few bucked them as hard as the Thin White Duke.

The legendary David Bowie is remembered as much for his intoxicating charisma as he is his music. The extravagant, flamboyant Ziggy Stardust character enchanted audiences hitherto alien to such creativity, and the lines between Bowie's stage persona and that of his real-life were heavily blurred.

In 1983, Bowie revealed his bisexuality, vacillating on the claim repeatedly over the years. But he was never afraid to be whoever he was at the time, and the progressive effect of a rock-star the magnitude of Bowie espousing such a lax attitude to sexuality was extraordinary.

Bowie kowtowed to nobody. After his death, his producer succinctly wrote:

"He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life — a work of art."

And who can argue? He even wore an eyepatch, man.

All of these men were not only true to themselves, but they trail blazed and broke down barriers for all those who have followed. By being true to themselves and not wavering to expectations they made society stand up and take notice, and are revered all the more for it.
