7 Most Astonishing Secret Football Contract Clauses Ever
1. The Crazy Goalkeeper Clause
Hugo Lloris signed for Tottenham Hotspur in August 2012, for €10 million. The former Lyon shot-stopper arrived at White Hart Lane with a glittering CV, having been voted UNFP Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year, two years in succession.
The signing was seen as one of real intent, suggesting that the Londoners were ready to push onto the next level, after a season which saw them finish just outside the Champions League qualification spots.
The Frenchman's contract was very secretive and included some really unusual clauses. They say goalkeepers have to be a little bit crazy and Lloris certainly has a rather eccentric contract.
He has to pay Tottenham £3,500 every time Spurs fail to win. A draw or a loss triggers the clause, so Lloris pays the price in more ways than one, if Spurs are not victorious.
Thankfully for Lloris his multi-layered contract also states that he receives a healthy £8000 for a win. He also pockets £7,000 pounds for every game in which he starts. The rather unusual arrangement seems to be working perfectly and Lloris negotiated a three-year extension to his deal in 2016, which will take him up to the 2022 season.
