7 Most Dramatic Finishes In Rugby Union History
4. "The Do Not Do The Ordinary"
Since the appointment of Dai Young in 2011, Wasps began to blossom from relegation contenders to one of the top teams in Europe.
Wasps reached the Quarter Final stage of the Champions Cup the previous year and were looking to take it one step further.
Earning the top spot in the "Pool of Death", comprising of previous champions, Toulon, Leinster and Bath Rugby, Wasps would host Exeter Chiefs in the Quarter Final. A team who had also been steadily progressing each season, having only been in the top tier of English rugby for six years.
Despite Charles Piutau's early score in the second half to reduce the gap. Exeter had a 13 point lead with 20 minutes to play, thanks to a brace from Thomas 'The Tank Engine' Waldrom, one from Harry Williams and points from the boot of Gareth Steenson.
It was looking like there was no way back for the former two time European champions, as the Chiefs were camped mere metres from their line. However, Ashley Johnson and Thomas Young manage to turn the ball over. Wasps flung the ball back into their in-goal area and, despite an initial fumble, launched a counter attack that you would only likely see and play in a game of EA Rugby 08.
Eliot Daly squeezed through two defenders, sprinting up to his own 22m, evading another tackle. He fed to Charles Piutau, drawing Exeter's covering defence before shipping the ball to speedster and NFL convert, Christian Wade. He blitzed up the wing to the Chief's 22m, attempting to offload but the ball was lost. The passage of play didn't end there. With Thomas Young eventually breaking past four tiring Exeter players to send Charles' brother, Siale Piutau down the wing with Winger, Frank Halai, in support, who gathered to score, making sure to get as close to the post as possible for a simpler conversion.
Wasps controlled the possession for majority of the final 10 minutes but could not quite breach the tenacious Chief's defence. Time was almost up, Wasps were six points down and a Semi Final spot against Saracens was slipping away.
A final opportunity presented itself when Wasps won a penalty for offside and launched a kick down field into their opponent's 22. What followed was two minutes of pick-and-goes and drives, the home side getting closer and closer.
And then...
"Siale Piutau once again rattling the locks. Gopperth...and now, Daly...and Piutau!..Piutau!"
Charles' try set up a nail biting final moment, with Jimmy Gopperth having to nail the conversation, five metres from touch, in the last play of the game for a place in the Semi Final. A kick even some of his team mates couldn't watch.
The former Newcastle and Leinster man took his time, went through his routine and stepped up to kick for glory. He hit it sweetly and was celebrating before the ball had even cross the uprights. The conversation was successful, making the Ricoh rock. A truly dramatic comeback from Dai Young's men.
Wasps certainly don't do the ordinary.
