7 Things We Learned From UFC 205
2. Miesha Tate Says Goodbye
The most depressing news to come out of UFC 205 was the announcement from Miesha Tate that she's calling it a career. The former women's bantamweight champion and Ronda Rousey's arch-nemesis was coming off a title loss to Amanda Nunes going into her fight with Raquel Pennington and most predicted she would get back on track with a win over "Rocky".
The two were familiar with each other as Tate coached Pennington when she was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter, and after suffering a unanimous decision loss to her former student where she failed to get anything of note going, Tate told Joe Rogan that she was hanging up her 4 oz. gloves.
Joe asked if this was a decision she had been thinking about for a while or if it was based on the result of the fight and she said it was due to the loss. Miesha said she'd been fighting for ten years and it was no longer her time but "time for the future" as she gestured at Pennington.
It was a classy way to go out for a competitor who has always shown nothing but, and if she truly does walk away rather than get lured back into the cage for another big money fight with Rousey somewhere down the line, she's had a career that she should be proud of.
Thank you, Miesha.
