8 Football Teams Who Were Stripped Of Their League Titles
3. Skënderbeu - Albanian Superliga, 2015-16
Albania's Skënderbeu Korçë, having only ever won one previous league title in a century of existence, suddenly went on an incredible run of six straight championship wins in the 2010s. On a perhaps related note, they were also accused by UEFA in 2016 of fixing games on a scale unmatched in football history.
UEFA's Betting Fraud Detection System identified an enormous 53 Skënderbeu matches, both domestic and European games, between 2010 and 2016 which had attracted a large magnitude of suspicious gambling activity, leading them to conclude that the club have been at the heart of a long running organised crime operation.
This all led in 2018 to an unprecedented ten year ban from all European competition, a punishment which Skënderbeu, who deny all allegations, continue to fight.
The club's attempts to prove their innocence to UEFA have not been helped, though, by the fact that their own national federation agreed that the club had been illegally tampering with their results, stripping them of their 2015-16 league title and deducting them 12 points from the following season.
Last July, Skënderbeu took their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, who ruled that they were entirely comfortable with the proof that Skënderbeu had been routinely fixing matches and that the club fully deserved their decade away from European competition.
At least they can take comfort in the fact that their equally dubiously acquired titles from 2010 to 2015 remain theirs. For now, at least.
