Adam Scott And Jim Furyk Lead US PGA After Day 1

golf Adam Scott and veteran Jim Furyk lead the 2013 US PGA Championship after play concluded on the first day of the Major at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York on Thursday night. Both the veteran American and the in-form Scott carded 65's to leave them -5 for the tournament. Furyk, who won his only major at the US Open Championship in 2003, shot 3 birdies in his first 7 holes, and 6 in total, as he rolled back the years with an impressive Day 1 performance. Adam Scott shot 5 birdies in a row on 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, and despite a bogey at the Par 4 16th, still managed to force a tie for the lead with the ageing Pennsylvanian. The pair are one shot clear of Lee Westwood and David Hearn, both of whom shot 66 for 4 under par rounds. Hearn, who like Scott and Furyk shot 6 birdies in his round, hit bogeys at the Par 4's at the first and last holes, to leave him one adrift. World Number 12 Westwood had a bogeyless round, hitting 4 birdies on Par 4's to leave him also just the minimum behind. A crew of seven challengers are hot on their heels on -3, including English pairing Justin Rose and Paul Casey, leaving them perfectly poised going into Day 2. Last year's champion, Irishman Rory McIlroy, is still in the hunt, having carded a respectable 69 to leave him 4 shots off the lead on the opening day, and still in with a very strong chance of retaining his title. Heavily backed World No.1 Tiger Woods shot a double-bogey on 9, as he limped to a 71, on +1, yet still a mere 6 shots off the pace with 3 days left to claw back the leaders for the in-form American, who hasn't won a Major title since the US Open in 2008.
