Arsenal Transfers: 10 Players Wenger Must Buy To Catch City

1. Douglas

With French flop Sebastian Squillaci expected to be sold this summer and Laurent Koscielny looking shaky last season, Arsene Wenger should look to strengthen at the back. The imposing 24-year-old Brazilian central defender Douglas is thought to be one of the best in his position in the Dutch league and has been linked with the top Premier League clubs as he refuses to sign an extension to his contract that expires in 12 months. His future at FC Twente has grown ever more dubious after failing to return from his homeland to start pre-season training which has infuriated boss Steve McClaren. Newcastle United think highly of Douglas but their offers (believed to be in the £5 million range) have so far fell on deaf ears in Holland. If Wenger was to offer a little bit more, they could swoop in and snatch the defender from underneath their Premier League rivals' noses. We know Wenger has been in the market for a new central defender all summer and lost out on his first choice, former PSV Eindhoven centre-half Jan Vertonghen who instead joined Tottenham Hotspur. Douglas could well be the answer to keeping more clean sheets next season and going one step further to catching Manchester City.
